When Southern Academy visits Canoe Friday the fireworks will be heard all the way in Mobile. Southern comes into the Cougars Den having destroyed their past two opponents 69-0 and 85-3.
But Escambia Academy football head coach Heath Gibson is not scared.
"They are tough in between the tackles and they have a fullback who is probably the most physical football player I have ever seen," Gibson said. "But our defense is confident that they can stop the run."
Gibson said his team will have to work on a few things before the matchup with Southern.
"We got on our heels last week against Patrician and we let up a big run and an 80-yard pass in back-to-back plays on defense," he said. "We just could not get our composure together and the best chance we will have against Southern is to limit their big hit capabilities and it is a good thing they run the ball a lot."
To keep the opposition on their toes, Gibson said some new plays will be added into the EA playbook for this game.
"We want to open up the offense a little bit more," Gibson said. "Jon Dean has done a good job of handling our offense and we want to put more pressure on him and see how he handles it. I know he will do a good job managing the game."
Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. on Bachelor Field on the friendly confines of the Academy.
