Every year each Escambia County High School athletic team partakes in the County Tournament. This year's volleyball squad traveled to Flomaton Oct. 6 to face host Flomaton, T.R. Miller and W.S. Neal high schools.
The Lady Devils had a strong showing, but did not come away with any wins. Head coach Todd Reynolds said it was just enough effort to not win.
"They are playing good," Reynolds said. "But they have not been able to finish any match off. They just had no killer instinct in the county tournament."
In the county tournament the format of a match is slightly different than normal volleyball rules. Instead of each match being a best of five sets, they were best of three sets.
Against Flomaton the score was 2-0 (25-23, 25-21) in favor of the Lady 'Canes. The Lady Devils' match against T.R. Miller was no different. It was a 2-0 loss and this time the set scores were 25-18 and 25-19. The team's final match against W.S. Neal was more of the same, a 2-0 (25-23, 25-20) defeat.
"None of the matches were blowouts, but we just couldn't find that spark to win a set," Reynolds said.
On Oct. 10 the girls faced AHSAA Class 4A Region 1 foes Thomasville and Monroe County in a doubleheader, they did win one set, but it was ultimately two more losses.
The squad's one set win came against Monroeville, but they lost 2-1 (21-25, 25-23, 25-18). Thomasville beat the Lady Devils in straight sets, 2-0 (25-18, 25-19).
Atmore competed in the area tournament yesterday and the results will be in an upcoming Advance. This tournament is the end of the volleyball season for the Lady Devils.
