Wednesday's wicked weather that slammed through the area found many residents unprepared and left in a state of shock.
While our area is no stranger to hurricane preparedness, we tend to focus less on what to do in the event of a tornado. A lot of that is due to the fact that hurricanes give us fair warning as experienced in Wednesday's storms, tornados do not.
There is no such thing as guaranteed safety inside a tornado. Freak accidents happen; and the most violent tornadoes can level and blow away almost any house and its occupants. Extremely violent F5 tornadoes are very rare, though. Most tornadoes are actually much weaker and can be survived using the following safety tips.

  • Know the signs of a tornado: Look for these signs:
    Strong, persistent rotation in the cloud base.
