Eubie Lee Coon
McCULLOUGH – Mr. Eubie Lee Coon, 87, passed away on Saturday, March 24, 2007 in Atmore.
Mr. Coon was a native and resident of McCullough for most of his life. He was an avid farmer and excellent farm mechanic, and attended the Atmore Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Survivors include: his son, Berran L. "Pete" and Shelia Coon of Atmore; three daughters, Glenda Faye and William Beach of Booneville, Veronyka and Bob White of Bay Minette, and Gerri Lynn Crocker of Prattville; his stepdaughter, Judith Ann and Ronald Cochran of Milton, Fla.; 20 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Faye Phillips of Atmore and Grace Mack of Dauphin Island.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 26, 2007 at 2 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with President Jack Anderson officiating.
Burial followed at the McCullough Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Josh Coon, Jordan Coon, John L. Beach, Tom Beach, Bob White and Phil Mack.
Cleo Harris
FREEMANVILLE – Miss Cleo Harris, 70, passed away on Saturday, March 24, 2007 at a local hospital.
Ms. Harris was a native of Little River, a former resident of Poarch for most of her life, a resident of Freemanville for the past five years and attended the Baptist Church.
Preceded in death by her parents, John and Liza Harris, two brothers and a sister.
Survivors include: her brother, Leo Harris of Atmore; and three sisters, Ms. Ida Hall of Freemanville, Ms. Bertha Adams of Bay Minette and Ms. Lillian Currie of Perdido.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronald Hall officiating.
Burial will follow at the Judson-Creek Indian Cemetery.
Visitation was held Tuesday, March 27, 2007 from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be: Jerry Harris, Randy Bridges, Freddie Weekley, Chris Burklund, Wayne Harris, and Floyd Harris.
Katie Lee Carstarphen
ATMORE – Katie Lee Carstarphen was the only child born to Peter and Mamie Mallard on June 12, 1924 in Wilcox County. She grew up and was educated there and also given the nickname Katie Lee "Busy" Mallard. She met and married Henry Knight and seven children were born from that union.
After 12 years of marriage, Henry Knight went on to be with the Lord. Later on she met and married Winnie Carstarphen and from that union three daughters were born. Katie temporarily relocated to Westburg, N.Y., so she could provide a better life for her children. She worked for many years at Plainview Nursing Home in Plainview, N.Y. as a nursing assistant. She became ill and was unable to work. But, she continued to support her children and played an important role in her many grandchildren's lives.
She later relocated back to Atmore to help take care of her sick mother. After the death of her mother, she decided to stay in Atmore. Katie was an active member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. She also enjoyed singing, cooking and making quilts. But, her passion was for gardening. She remained an active member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church until she broke her hip. After that, her health continued to decline.
Katie Lee Carstarphen departed this world on March 21, 2007. She leaves to cherish her memory; Rebecca (Albert) Nichols, James Knight of Mims, Fla., Mamie (James) Gibson of Westbury, N.Y., Major Knight of Atmore, Lillie Knight of Westbury, N.Y., Mary (Tommy) Andrews of Atmore, Essie Mariah Carstarphen of Schenectady, N.Y., Vivian (Lee) Carstarphen of Schenectady, N.Y., and Peter Knight, who proceeded her in death on Jan. 10, 1996; 14 grandchildren, Lyodd, Everton, Kendrick, Patrick, Sabrina, Karen, Veronica, Jermaine, James, Jr., Katie, Katrina, Rebecca, Kelsie, Ashton; to great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Elmira Judson of Los Angeles, Calif., Flora Judson of Coy, and Estella James of Beatrice; and two brothers-in-law, Straitman Judson of Mobile, James (Quincy) Judson of Los Angeles, Calif. and a host of nieces and nephews.
Katie, a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend will be missed and will forever live in our hearts.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 31, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Second Mt. Triumph Church.
Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery.
Family will receive friends Friday, March 30, 2007 from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Pallbearers were Patrick McKinley, Jermaine McKinley, James Gibson, Jr., James Knight, Major Knight and Edwin Pierre.
Flower bearers were friends and family.
Christian Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
