(This week The Atmore Advance spotlights Winston Foster, 63. Foster enjoys hunting and fishing. His proudest moment as a hunter was when he killed a deer with his pocket knife. He also enjoys eating peas and butter beans. Foster lives in between Atmore and Bay Minette and likes to travel to one of the two towns for entertainment in his spare time.)
Q: When and where were you born?
A: I was born in Hog Fort in 1943.
Q: When did you move to Atmore?
A: I moved to Atmore when I was about 16 years old.
Q: Who were your parents?
A: Maggie and Lee Foster.
Q: Do you have any brothers or sisters?
A: I have one brother and two sisters.
Q: Where do they live?
A: Aubrey is in Rabun, and the girls are in Loxley and Bay Minette. I do get to see them often.
Q: Where did you attend high school and college?
A: I went to Perdido until the seventh grade then I dropped out.
Q: Do you do a lot of traveling?
A: No, I like to stay at home.
Q: Do you ever go to Pensacola, Fla., or Mobile for fun?
A: I live halfway between Atmore and Bay Minette so I go there for fun.
Q: What jobs have you held?
A: I was raised on a farm around Atmore. It had cows, hogs, chicken and we rowed crops. I worked at Southern Frontier in Bay Minette. I worked on boats and oil rigs out of Louisiana. I retired from International Paper Company, IP, in 1983. I hurt my back so I had to retire.
Q: What did you do at the the International Paper Company?
A: I ran tree cutters and heavy equipment.
Q: Did you ever marry?
A: Yes, I am not married now.
Q: Do you have any children or grandchildren?
A: I have a girl and a boy. Darlene lives in Perdido and George lives in Rabun.
Q: Do you see your children often?
A: Yes, I'm lucky that I have all my family close by, they check on me regularly.
Q: Where do you attend church?
A: I'm sad to say that I don't.
Q: What keeps you busy these days?
A: Doing this and doing that. I come to the SAIL Center every now and then. Hunting and fishing are my favorite hobbies. I go up toward the Tensaw to fish.
Q: What's the biggest deer you have ever killed?
A: An eight-point was the biggest deer I ever killed.
Q: Do you have a memorable hunting story to share?
A: The one I had the most fun killing was one I killed with my pocket knife. My wife, before she passed, and I were driving and a four-point came out in front of us and ran into a fence. I got out and killed it with a pocket knife. Nobody believes me when I tell them that story.
Q: Is there anything else you like to do for fun?
A: I like to ride motorcycles, too. I like to ride horses a lot.
Q: What's your favorite TV show?
A: I like to watch wrestling.
Q: Who is your favorite wrestler?
A: I don't have a favorite wrestler, I like all of them.
Q: What's your favorite food?
A: Peas and butter beans.
Q: Do you cook a lot?
A: No, I burn water.
Q: What advice would you like to give people on staying healthy?
A: Don't mope an don't gripe and to eat healthy.
