The Atmore Motocross Park was buzzing once again May 26-28 after an almost three-month hiatus of activity. The track held a special Memorial Day celebration during the seventh round of the Gulf Coast MX Championship Series with free practice on Memorial Day for any registered rider.
But that was not the only action of the day. Riders participated in the many different races and track promoter Steve Hicks said it was a good weekend.
"More than 200 riders and their families from Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama participated in the points races," Hicks said. "And it was good to see the beginner classes packed at the gates because the sport is growing and there is another group of good young riders starting to enjoy and participate."
Hicks said the series has brought out the best in many of the riders.
"Many of the riders have advanced up to the next level of competition since the series began in February," he said.
The race was the final in the spring season of the Championship Series. The series will pick up again Aug. 18-19 in Baker, Fla. at Southern MX. The series returns to Atmore Aug. 25-26 with the ninth round of the series. Atmore hosts one more round of the series Oct. 20-21 before it is all over with Nov.10-11 in Tallassee at Monster Mountain.
Hicks said the track would like to thank all the riders who support the seriessponsors for a good fall season. Sponsors include, Thor, Moose, Scott Goggles, EBC, A&B Cycles, Harrison's Powersports, Hattiesburg Cycles, Moto-Tech, LAPowersports, Racinginnovationsmx.com, PhotoFuntastic.com, Kenny's Motorsports, WRHRACING.com, Cook's Coastal Equipment Rentals, D&D KTM and Mobile Cycle.
Billy Boyer of Racers 4 Christ out of Monroeville has provided the track with a Sunday church service at the tracks in Alabama and Florida and Hicks said his service is a valuable need.
Overall the season has been good and Hicks said he hopes the success continues when the riders return from the two-month break in June and July.
