Agency assists with electricity bill
The Community Action Agency of Escambia County will be accepting applications beginning June 1 to assist low-income families with their electricity bill. The program extends through the summer months assisting households with an allotment established by the Federal government.

Swimming, tennis lessons offered
The pool at Tom Byrne Park is officially open for the summer. With its opening comes several events to keep you busy and cool during the hot months.
Public swimming on Sunday through Saturday is from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Admission for public swimming is $1 for anyone 17 years old and younger and $1.50 for those 18 and older.
Swimming and tennis lessons are also available as well as party rates.

WHMC Vacation Bible School ends June 8
Walnut Hill Mennonite Church invites everyone age 5 through grade 10 to attend Vacation Bible School. It will be held May 28 through June 8 from 6 p.m until 8:30 p.m.

Summer art classes offered at new gallery
Summer art classes will be held starting June from 1 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. Tuesday – Thursday at the new art gallery/studio, 106 W. Ridgeley St.

Summer Reading continues until July 6
The Atmore Public Library is having their Summer Reading Program each Friday beginning June 1 through July 6 from 10 a.m until 11 a.m. for children ages 5-12.
Brooks Memorial VBS begins this Monday
Brooks Memorial Baptist Church will host Vacation Bible School-Game Day Central June 4-8 from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. from ages 4 thru 6th grade.
Registration will be held Saturday, June 2 at Atmore City Pool from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. All registered children will be allowed to swim.
ECTS Class of 1967 reunion meeting June 9
The Escambia County Training School Class of 1967 reunion meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on June 9 at Vasaroy Johnson's home. Immediately after the meeting, a birthday party will be held to celebrate Vasaroy's birthday.

First Assembly will offer Spanish in June
First Assembly of God will hold a Conversational Spanish Class on Monday nights at 5:30 starting June 18.
The class will go through July 23. Cost of the class is $12 for the book.
Commission meeting slated for June 11
The Escambia County Commission will conduct a regular session at 9 a.m. June 11 in the County Commission Chambers, Room 201, at the Escambia County Courthouse in Brewton.
The Administrative Workshop will be held at 9 a.m June 7.
PGBC to begin VBS at 5:30 p.m. June 11
Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, located at 3564 Butler Street in Atmore will have Vacation Bible School starting June 11 through June 15 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
The theme is "The Avalanche Ranch Stampede."
Registration begins June 9 at 11 a.m. with wagon rides for all.

Taste of the South scheduled for Aug. 11
The annual Taste of the South food festival will be held Aug. 11 at Heritage Park.

Huxford VFD fish fry scheduled for June 16
The Huxford Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting its annual catfish fry from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. on June 16 at the fire station on old Front Street in Huxford.
The plates will be $6 with all proceeds going to the fire department. Make plans to attend and thank you for your support.
Martinville Baptist VBS June 30 only
Vacation Bible School will be held for one day only, June 30 at Martinville Baptist Church from 9 a.m. until noon.
Preschool through 6th grade students are invited to enjoy the Gospel programs and activities for four dynamic individuals from the Baptist Association's Summer Ministry youth group. A light lunch will be provided. From Atmore, take Hwy 21 north, go right on Martinville Loop or Martinville Circle and the church is on the right.

Penton-Mitchell families needed
In an effort to identify unmarked grave sites in the historical burial ground, the Milton Cemetery Board is attempting to locate descendants of the J.S. Penton family (early 1900s), and a Mitchell family (1914). After posting a public notice, the Cemetery can declare the empty plots "abandoned" and put them up for resale.

Geography of the Holy Land Monday nights
The First Assembly of God Berean School of the Bible Study Center will begin a new study course on "Geography of the Holy Land" on Monday nights at 5:30.
The first class began May 7. This will be a four-week course. Anyone interested should call the church office at 368-4637.
Cost for the course is $122. There is an additional $20 charge for first time students.
VFW dances held every Friday night
Friday Night Dances are held at the Atmore VFW Post Veterans of Foreign Wars Friday nights from 7:30 p.m. until 11 p.m. (daylight saving time) and from 6 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. (Central Standard Time).
Dances are open to Post members and the general public as long as participants are registered as a Post member's guest for a donation fee of $5 per person. The Post's band EXIT 54 provides country and rock and roll music.
On special occasions, dance participants enjoy "potluck" finger foods or a dinner.
The VFW is located at 206 West Ashley Street in Atmore.

ECMS hosts Smart Links in June
Smart Links is a great way for children in grades K-8 to spend their summer. The program provides academic enrichment in a safe environment so that children are actively involved in the learning process throughout the year.
This year the program will begin June 4 and end June 29. Participates will be provided breakfast and lunch daily. The hours of operation are from 7:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday through Friday at Escambia County Middle School. Classes will include environmental science activities, arts and crafts, swimming, academic enrichment, recreational activities, cheer leading, music, sign language and pottery. There is a one time registration fee of $50 for the entire month's activities. Limited transportation will be provided daily.
Smart Links will also provide beginning Internet classes and beginning photography classes for the community on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. There is no charge for the evening classes and materials will be furnished.

The pool is also available for rent for private parties on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Cost for pool rental is $35 per hour and that covers lifeguards and pool usage.
Day and night swimming lessons and tennis lessons are also available.
Day swimming and tennis lessons are available in two-week sessions and there are three time slots for the lessons. Times available are 9 a.m. until 10 a.m., 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. and 11 a.m. until noon. The cost is $20 per session.
Registration day for session two is June 11 from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. and the session will be June 18-29. Registration day for session three is June 25 from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. and the session will be July 2-13. Registration day for session four is July 9 from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. and the session will be July 16-27.
Night swimming lesson sessions will last three weeks and take place on Tuesday and Thursday nights at one of three times, 5:30 p.m. until 6 p.m., 6 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. The cost is $30 per session.
Registration day for session two is June 18 from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. and the session will be July 17-Aug. 2.
Registration will continue the next day for all sessions until all classes are filled.
