Twenty-year-old Atmore resident, Shawn Curtis Haskew, was arrested and charged with raping and sodomizing a 17-year-old girl on Independence Day, but according to Sergeant Adam Johnson, the case is not closed. He remains behind bars at the Escambia County Jail.
"This is still under investigation," Johnson said.
The Escambia County Sheriff's Department dispatched deputy Curtis Smith to North Main Street at 4:42 a.m. July 4. When the deputy arrived at the home, he spoke to the 17-year-old's mother, who claimed her daughter had been raped inside a home on Sunset Drive.
The victim spoke with officers and claimed that she woke up when Haskew covered her mouth with his hand. She said Haskew then raped and sodomized her. The victim escaped to the home's kitchen area where she cut the suspect on the hand with a knife.
Johnson interviewed the victim at the hospital before she was discharged.
"She was treated and released from the hospital in Atmore," Johnson said.
With help from Investigator Cameron Fillingim, Johnson interviewed Haskew.
According to reports, Haskew admitted that he had been drinking and smoking marijuana before the claimed attack but Johnson said he did not appear to be either drunk or feeling the effects of marijuana. Haskew told the officers that the sexual activities between himself and the victim started as consensual. When investigators asked Haskew about the cut on his hand, he claimed he did not know why the victim cut him.
Johnson could not disclose why the victim and Haskew were at the residence on Sunset Drive on July 4.
Haskew is still incarcerated and has a $25,000 consolidated bond.
