The Atmore Motocross Park hosted a race event for all riders not tied up with regional and national competitions July 14-15.
Track promoter Steve Hicks said the race weekend saw about 100 riders. This race was only to keep the people in Atmore interested for when the Gulf Coast MX Championship Series returns to Atmore Aug. 24-25.
Hicks said there have been more than 1,000 different riders at the halfway point for the Series, which spans seven tracks across the Gulf Coast. But, he said the second half should be even better.
"We expect the second half of the season to be even better with a return to Southern MX Park in Baker, Fla. Aug. 18-19 and back here to Atmore MX Park Aug. 25-26," Hicks said. "And in October, riders will also make their first road trips to Kentwood, La., Hattiesburg, Miss. and nationally known Mill Creek MX Resort in Pell City."
The riders on hand in Hattiesburg will race under the lights to escape the heat of the summer.
Hicks said there have been many riders in the series who have qualified for national competition.
"The series is also proud of the number of participants that have qualified for the nationals in both motocross and quad racing," Hicks said. "These riders are racing against a very high level of pro, amateur and youth talent from all over the country. All the tracks, sponsors and riders seem to be thrilled about the turnout and competition that the series has provided."
The Atmore Motocross Park will be the place to be Aug. 24-25, Hicks said.
