Escambia County High School's football team have now officially hit the field running. The Blue Devils had their first day of practice for the 2007 season Monday and head coach Kyle Davis said it was a good day.
"There is not much you can say about the first day because now that we can practice in the summer, these first three days are nothing special," Davis said. "But our kids went out there and hustled."
The three days Davis is talking about are the first three days of practice when the players are in helmets and shorts. They are not allowed to go to pads and hit each other until the fourth day of practice.
Whether the Devils are hitting or not, Davis said there should be some good battles for some playing time through the next three-plus weeks of practice.
"We have some young kids who will come in here and compete for some playing time," he said. "We are going to have a lot of guys playing both ways this year, so it will be crucial to have those guys who can go in for 10-12 plays and produce for us."
The first day of practice, Davis said, will be tomorrow when the Devils suit up in pads and can hit each other and gauge how far the summer has brought them.
But overall, Davis said the first day of practice went well and the team is looking good.
