The Tri-County/Northwest Escambia Junior League girls' all-star team recently captured the Florida Section I Championship by defeating Fort Braden of Tallahassee twice, 7-1 and 7-1.
This win advanced the girls to the Elite Eight State Tournament in Tampa. The girls went 3-0 in pool play. They beat Deland 11-1, Casselberry 30-5 and Palma Ceia/Tampa Bay 5-1 to advance to the semi-finals for the first time ever.
The all-stars faced Indian River and lost a 6-0 lead, losing 7-6 in the final inning. Indian River went on to win the state championship.
"The girls played hard and gave it all they had," manager Tony Simpson said. "We just came up a little short. More than one person made the statement that we were the class of the field. Everyone can be proud of what they accomplished."
Tina Digmon, Mark Digmon and Danny Vickrey assisted Simpson with the team. The team included, Megan Donald, Paige Harwell, Emily Vickrey, Sarah Killam, Amber McMillan, Kolbi Cobb, Miranda Burkett, Hayley Simpson, Shawna Montgomery, Shanique Jones and Ashley Digmon.
