Jarman headed to New York with seniors

(This week The Atmore Advance spotlights 77-year-old Elsie Jarman. Jarman enjoys traveling with the Poarch SAIL Center seniors to different places throughout the United States. The SAIL Center group is traveling to New York Sept. 16 and will also spend some time at Niagra Falls in Canada.)
Q: When and where were you born?
A: I was born in Uriah on Oct. 3, 1929.
Q: Who were your parents?
A: Bessie Booker and John Henry Conway.
Q: Do you have any brothers or sisters?
A: I have one living brother, Huey Conway.
Q: Where does your brother live?
A: He lives in Atmore.
Q: Where did you attend high school and college?
A: I think the first year or two I went to Huxford. I went to McCullough for one year and then to Atmore in the third grade.
I quit school in the 10th grade and got married.
Q: Do you do a lot of traveling?
A: Mostly just with the senior citizens at Poarch now.
Q: Where all have you gone with the seniors?
A: I went to New Mexico a couple of times with them. We've been to Canada, Wisconsin, the Carolinas, Florida and we always go to Valley.
I'm going to New York with the seniors on Sept. 16. The first stop is in Canada at Niagra Falls.
Q: What jobs have you held?
A: For 20 years I worked at Goodwill Manufacturing Company. Then, I worked 22 years at Vanity Fair. I retired from there in January of 1992.
Q: Did you ever marry?
A: Twice. My first husband was Carvin Davis and my second husband was Tom Jarman.
Both are deceased.
Q: Do you have any children?
A: Yes, the oldest is Elsie Tillery. She lives in Bon Secure Bay. There's Mary Edwards, she lives in Louisiana. There's Thomas Davis, he lives in Calera and there is John Davis, he lives in Summerdale.
Q: Do you get to see your children often?
A: I don't get to see them a whole lot. I see Elsie more because she goes with me a lot to the doctors and such.
Q: Where do you attend church?
A: The Baptist Temple.
Q: What keeps you busy these days?
A: I do a lot of embroidering work. I also come to the (Poarch) SAIL Center. I exercise twice a week.
I've had some trouble with my shoulder so I'm going to the pain clinic in Pensacola. I'm going to Pensacola to get a perm. I work in the yard some, but I don't keep house much.
Q: What's your favorite TV show?
A: I don't watch TV. If I ever watch, it's the news.
Q: What's your favorite food?
A: I like vegetables. I like fish and chicken. I don't care too much for beef.
Q: What advice would you like to give people on staying healthy?
A: Don't drink, don't smoke. Go to church, eat right and take exercise.
