Atmore's Relay for Life held its first team captains meeting Thursday.
Relay for Life co-chair Deborah Camp said she feels the first meeting was great.
"I think it went well," Camp said. "We had a lot of information in that hour and really had some energetic new captains."
Camp said there were many things the team captains talked about at the meeting.
"We discussed the upcoming chili cook off on Dec. 8," she said. "We talked about 'paint the town purple,' which is the week before the event. We are going to literally paint Atmore purple. We are going to host a contest for businesses and homes who have the best purple decorations for the week. We hope to decorate the whole town purple. They got their team packets and a checklist on making it easy to be a team captain. They got some motivational things on how to get people involved."
Camp said approximately 30 people showed up at the meeting. A couple of team members, but mostly captains co-captains and committee members were in attendance. Thus far, Relay has 12 confirmed teams.
The theme for 2008 Relay for Life is "cancer has no borders – searching the world for a cure" and each team is encouraged to be creative with their Relay tents this year.
There are several individuals assisting with Relay for Life this year including, event co-chair and fundraising development, Becky Ganey; event co-chair and event development, Deborah Camp' sponsorship chair, Walt Butler; luminaria chair, Kitty Day; accounting chair, Angela Boatwright; survivorship development chair, Cindy Lee; memorial chair, Wanda Hall; ceremonies chair, Adrienne McKenzie; activities chair, Edie Jackson; mission delivery chair, Pat Eddins; logistics chair, Cereal Daniels; entertainment chair, Amy Akins; honorary chair, Susan Bethea and publicity chairs, Sherry Digmon, Myrna Monroe and Adam Prestridge. Open chairs include, team development and online. There is also a sub-committee, which will include four local teenagers.
"We still have some positions that need to be filled," Camp said.
The next team captains meeting will be held Oct. 25 at Brooks Memorial Baptist Church at noon.
