Patty Helton Davis was honored for the second meeting in a row as the Atmore Lions Club held its bimonthly meeting Oct. 3. Davis was named a Melvin Jones Fellow in August and received her plaque at the Sept. 19 Lions Club meeting, and she garnered three more awards this week.
Alabama Lions District 34N governor G.P. Gary was present at the meeting to award Davis with the 2006-07 Club President Excellence Award, a membership growth award and a certificate of appreciation.
"It is an honor and a privilege to receive these awards," Davis said. "To get these awards from an organization that helps so many people is great."
Davis was president for two terms from 2005-07.
She had to meet certain criteria during her time as president to be eligible for the President Excellence Award. That criteria included, keeping the name of the club in good standing and abiding by the International Club constitution and by-laws, conducting one major service activity during the year as a club, gaining at least one new member to the club, not having an unpaid balance of more than $50, submitting International Club reports, the president attending certain International meetings and having new members properly inducted into and involved in the club.
Davis said the Presidential Excellence Award was the award she thought she was receiving when she received the Melvin Jones Fellowship in August, but it was a pleasant surprise to be named a Fellow.
"I just tried to do as much as possible in my time as president," she said. "And it really helped to simply ask people to become members. I would ask some people and they said no one had ever asked them to be a part of the club. So it is really as simple as asking someone to be a part of the club."
