The Northview Chiefs hit the road for their third district game Friday hoping for a win and a third straight district championship.
The Chiefs were disappointed on the way home after a 27-21 loss to Vernon High School.
Northview (4-3, 2-1 FHSAA Class 2B, District 1) now needs some help from Baker and Holmes County to snag that third title. The Chiefs gave up the top spot in the district with the loss Friday.
Vernon (3-4, 2-0) took a 27-8 lead and withstood two late NHS scoring drives for the win.
Sophomore quarterback Tarus Thomas scored the game's first touchdown from four yards out and NHS held a 6-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets proceeded to outscore the Chiefs 27-2 until the fourth quarter.
NHS junior quarterback Jeff Price hit senior running back Nakita Myles on a screen pass for 28 yards and a touchdown and Price ran in from one yard out to tighten the score to 27-21 with 55 seconds left in the game.
The Chiefs recovered an onside kick, but four incomplete passes allowed the Yellow Jackets to savor a victory they thought they had in hand at the beginning of the final quarter.
