Councilman John Watkins laid to rest
Atmore councilman John Watkins was laid to rest Thursday afternoon at Fairview Cemetery.
Watkins, 79, who had served Atmore's city council for 16 years, passed away the evening of Jan. 10 at Atmore Community Hospital with his wife, Veola, at his bedside.
Atmore mayor Howard Shell and the city council honored Watkins at Monday's city council meeting and a black bow was placed in front of the chair he occupied for more than a decade.
A special scheduled council meeting will be held at 8:30 a.m. Friday morning for the council to appoint Watkins' replacement.
