An elderly Nokomis couple is counting their blessing after escaping from their burning mobile home early Tuesday morning.
Homer Brown was awoken just before 6 a.m. by smoke coming from a burning bed in the home.
"When I woke up, the house was full of smoke," he said. "The bed in the other room was on fire. I had to get out of there."
Homer said he quickly woke his wife, Fannie, up and threw as many of their clothes in the yard before escaping.
Although the cause of the fire is unknown, it is believed that it could have been ignited by one of many kerosene heaters burning in the home.
Nokomis Volunteer Fire Department, Atmore Fire Department and Poach Fire Department all responded to the scene.
