An 18-wheeler hauling pea gravel overturned early Thursday morning in the parking lot of the Citgo gas station on South Main Street.
Officials at the scene said that the load of pea gravel apparently shifted in the trailer the big rig was pulling, causing it to topple over on its side around 6:02 a.m.
According to a spokesperson with the Atmore Police Department, the account of the accident Staples was given at the scene mirrored the narrative on the police report.
Medics with Kelley’s Ambulance Service treated and released the driver of the truck, Terry Sheffield, 34, of Flomaton at the scene for minor injuries. He was later transferred to Atmore Community Hospital by personal vehicle.
No damage was reported to the Citgo station, but the truck, which was owned by J&N Equipment, Inc. out of Loxley, did come to rest near a series of gas pumps and nearly knocked down a power pole. When the 52,000 pound truck came to rest on its side, the full load of pea gravel scattered all over Main Street, the ditch that runs along side the road causing minor traffic delays and also in the parking lot of the gas station.
Fortunately no fuel was spilt, so Hazmat crews were not dispatched to the scene.
The Atmore Police Department had five units at the scene and the Atmore Fire Department had five firefighters and two engines respond. Robinson Towing out of Perdido was also called to the scene.
