Huxford Elementary School fifth grade student Katelyn Godwin has been chosen as a state finalist for the National American Miss Pageant, to be held May 22-24 in Birmingham.
Godwin had competed in one pageant before receiving a certificate in the mail stating she had been chosen as an Alabama state finalist for the National American Miss Pageant. Even though Godwin is not a pageant expert, she is excited about making the trip to Birmingham.
Godwin is the daughter of Benjamin and Sheila Godwin. She likes to go horseback riding, dirtbike riding and she enjoys spending time with her friends and family.
Participants in the American Miss Pageant will be judged in four categories: formal wear, personal introduction, interview and community involvement.
Formal wear, personal introduction and interview each count 30 percent of each participant’s score.
During the formal wear portion of the event, the contestant will wear a dress that shows off their unique personality. The personal introduction is when the audience will get to know the contestant, who will state their name, hometown and where they see themselves in the future or something interesting about themselves. The interview is when each contestant will spend one-on-one time with each of the pageants judges.
Community involvement counts as 10 percent of the contestant’s final score. The 10 points can be acquired by donating a children’s book or a stuffed animal during pageant weekend. The contestants will give their item during the pageant to representatives of libraries, literacy programs, firefighters and policeman to assist with their work with children.
There are a variety of prizes Godwin could win in the pageant including, $1,000 in cash, entry fee’s paid for the national pageant or a VIP day for two in Hollywood.
Godwin would like to thank her sponsors: Harold Allen, Morris Mobile Homes, B&M Contracting, D&J Plumbing LLC, Viking Industries, Dean’s Grill, Redwood Mobile Home Park (Robbie and Angela Hayles), Huxford Elementary School principal Donna Silcox, Dixie Catfish, Service Auto Supply and Rolin’s Tires.
