Escambia County High School junior Tray Smith has been busy the past several weeks preparing for a project that will earn him the highest honor a Boy Scout can receive.
Smith, 17, will be hosting a voting registration drive for his Eagle Scout Service Project during next Saturday’s Mayfest held at Tom Byrne Park. Smith, who is political columnist for the Atmore Advance, said he decided on this project because it is close to his heart.
Residents of both Escambia County, Ala. and Escambia County, Fla. who will turn 18 at least 10 days before the general election in November are eligible to register. The voter registration drive is a non-partisan project intended to increase civic participation in elections, regardless of political learnings, Smith said.
Smith is also hoping his registration drive will spark an interest for the upcoming county and city elections. In addition to the general election in November, primary contest for local offices will be held in June and municipal elections will be held in August in Alabama. Residents who register will be eligible to vote in those elections as long as they are 18 at least 10 days prior to the election date.
The voter registration drive will be open all day.
