Both Democrat Brandon Smith and Republican Kevin McKinley won their respective races for Escambia County Commission District 4 by a landslide during the primary election held yesterday.
Smith scored a total of 262 votes, which was 70.05 percent on the Democratic side, beating incumbent William Brown, who received 112 votes, equaling 29.95 percent.
McKinley took home 251 votes for 59.2 percent of Republican votes, while former county commissioner for District 4 in 2000-04 James “Junior” Hall received 40.08 percent of the votes for a total of 173.
Smith said he thanks everyone who voted for him and also had kind words to say about his Nov. 4 opponent for the general election.
Smith said he did not expect to have more than 70 percent of the votes against Brown.
McKinley was also thrilled about winning the Republican side of the race.
According to McKinley, Tuesday’s primary race was the first time more people voted Republican in District 4.
McKinley was also grateful for those who have taken time to listen to his issues.
Although more people voted Republican than Democrat in District 4, Escambia County Probate Judge Emilie Mims said there was not a tremendous turnout at the polls.
