(This week The Atmore Advance spotlights 70-year-old Luverne Ward.)
Q: When and where were you born?
A: I was born in Escambia County in Atmore on Oct. 9, 1937.
Q: Who were your parents?
A: Ella Lou Daughtry and Savannah “Hawk” Daughtry.
Q: Where were your parents from?
A: Escambia County.
Q: What did your parents do for a living?
A: They were farmers.
Q: Do you have any brothers or sisters?
A: Yes. I have four that are alive and three that are deceased.
Q: Where did you attend school?
A: I went to Poarch Elementary here and Atmore for two years, I think.
Q: Do you do a lot of traveling?
A: I do with the seniors (from the Poarch SAIL Center).
Q: Where all have you traveled?
A: We’ve been to New York and Oklahoma and many places.
Q: Where did you work?
A: Mostly at home. My husband and I owned our own business building roof structure. I’m retired now and he’s deceased.
Q: Where have you lived?
A: From the East Coast to the West.
Q: Where was your favorite place to live?
A: Right here. I always come back here when I go away.
Q: What do you like most about Atmore?
A: Being able to go to church and the SAIL Center and just being free.
Q: Who was your husband?
A: Fred C. Ward.
Q: How long were you married?
A: 41 years.
Q: Do you have children?
A: I do. We have seven, two are deceased.
Q: Do you have any grandchildren?
A: Yes and great grandchildren.
Q: Where do you attend church?
A: Friendly Holiness Church.
Q: What keeps you busy these days?
A: The SAIL Center, you’ll find us just about every day up here. And working in my yard.
Q: What is your favorite food?
A: I like beans and cornbread.
Q: What advice would you like to give people on staying healthy?
A: Eat right, stay active and exercise.
