Atmore Police Department officers have worked diligently the past week with stabbings and high-speed chases and one officer injured in pursuit.
Last Wednesday officer Ryan James was injured during a high-speed chase when the vehicle in pursuit rammed his patrol car.
James said the chase began when patrol officers saw the suspect racing through the streets of Atmore.
James along with other officers chased the suspect down several Atmore streets. The chase came to a halt on Second Avenue.
According to the Highway Patrol post in Evergreen, the suspect is Howard Lorenzo Harris. He was driving a 2003 GMC when he hit James’ patrol vehicle at approximately 6:50 p.m. last Wednesday.
Harris is being held in Escambia County Jail.
James said he was in the hospital for a 24-hour observation period and that other than being sore, his only injury was a mild concussion. He returns to work this evening.
Atmore police were also busy last Friday when responding to a call at 112 S. Presley St.
According to a release from the department, the APD received a 9-1-1 call June 27 at approximately 9 p.m. requesting an ambulance. When paramedics and officers arrived on the scene, a 53-year-old male had been stabbed.
Atmore Ambulance transported the victim, whose name was not released at press time, to Atmore Community Hospital. Life Flight later transported the 53-year-old male to Baptist Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition, according to APD.
Steven Brown was arrested and charged with Assault First Degree.
