Enjoying ‘Cars,’ Yancy at FBC
By Adrienne McKenzie
This weekend was an eventful one for me in Atmore.
Friday night I made a short visit to Tom Byrne Park to see several people watching “Cars.” United Bank held its second “Screen on the Green” and a ton of people showed up to the event. Everyone seemed to be having a great time with popcorn, sodas and a lot of good socialization. Unfortunately I had to leave the event not long after arriving because I had to wake up early Saturday morning and wanted to get to bed.
Saturday night I attended a concert held at First Baptist Church in Atmore. Singer Yancy was there and was extremely motivational in her songs.
There were many children at the concert Saturday night and it was obvious they enjoyed Yancy’s performance. But it was not necessary to be a child to enjoy Yancy’s singing. I am 24 and I still felt like jumping around as Yancy rocked out!
It is obvious Yancy enjoys singing for children. The following is an excerpt from her Web site, www.yancynotnancy.com:
I enjoy Christian music and I am glad Atmore area churches can bring a variety of musicians in for worship and entertainment.
I remember when First Assembly of God had The Martins in. They were absolutely amazing, not only on stage, but also off stage. I had the opportunity to speak with The Martins after their concert and was amazed at how down-to-earth they were.
But back to Yancy, she gave some of the children the opportunity to share what they wanted to be when they grow up. There were a variety of answers, from doctors to rock stars. My personal favorite was a little girl who said she would like to be a ballerina. Yancy asked the little girl to jump on stage and do a little ballet twirl. The little girl did and it was so cute!
Even though the weekend is over I am sure that the “being busy” will not stop. This coming Saturday is the Atmore Rotary Club’s Fiddlers Convention. I attended the Fiddlers Convention last year and although it is not exactly my “type” of music, I really had a great time.
I hope Atmore area residents will help support the Rotary Club by attending the Fiddlers Convention. It will be held at Rachel Patterson Elementary School Saturday and will begin at 2 p.m.
There will be a variety of musical instruments played at the Fiddlers Convention, making for a spectacular showing.
I hope to see everyone there!
