APL to hold Back-to-School celebration
There will be a Partners Back-to-School Celebration on Aug. 2 at Atmore Public Library from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Recycle Now to meet Aug. 6 at APL
Atmore Recycle Now will meet Aug. 6 at 5 p.m. at the Atmore Public Library.
Atmore Recycle Now has reached the one-year mark of existence as a formal group of concerned citizens. The meeting will focus on a trip the group took to the Escambia County, Fla., recycling system.
The Atmore Recycle Now meeting is open to the public.
Learn to Read of NW Florida, a non-profit adult literacy program in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties will host an informational orientation meeting on Aug. 14, from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the Century Family Practice Building, located at 7600 Mayo St. in Century (the old Century hospital).
Prevention coalition to meet Sept. 12
The Southwest Alabama AIDS Prevention Coalition will not meet in August.
The next meeting will be on Sept. 12.

Historical society to meet Sept. 15
The Atmore Historical Society has disbanned for the summer. The next meeting will be held on Sept. 15, the third Monday of the month.
School news
ECMS to host orientation Aug. 5
Escambia County Middle School will host student orientations for new fifth and seventh graders on Aug. 5. Seventh graders will meet teachers and be orientated to schedules, lockers, etc. from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Fifth graders will be orientated from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Fifth graders will also be orientated to schedules, transitions and lockers. Teachers will prepare hamburgers and hotdogs for the students.
RPES to host Meet the Teacher Day
Rachel Patterson Elementary School will hold Meet the Teacher Day on Aug. 5 from 8 a.m. until noon. This is a perfect opportunity to bring school supplies and meet your child’s teacher. The first day of school will be Aug. 6.

Habitat to host Before Hours
The Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce’s Business Before Hours will be held Aug. 6 at 7:30 a.m. at Annie’s Community Cup, located at 125 North Main St.
The event will be presented by Greater Brewton Habitat for Humanity executive director Alecia C. Glaize. Information about the organization’s work to provide affordable housing for those in need, as well as exploring the possibility of Atmore and Brewton working together to expand services in the area will be given. Rusty Miller of Atmore, volunteer building supervisor for the organization, will also be in attendance.
Ceremony to be held in Uriah Aug. 7
A “Veterans Memorial Dedication Ceremony” will be held in Uriah on Aug. 7 at 7 p.m. Local veterans, along with approximately 20 to 25 WWII veterans will be honored with patriotic music, a presentation of the flags, a presentation of medals, etc.

FNB&T to hold J.J. Webb book signing
First National Bank &Trust will host a J.J. Webb Book Signing event Aug. 8 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the main office in downtown Atmore.
Books will be available for purchase for $23 at the book signing or you may log on to www.dorrancebookstore.com and check out the historical section.
Jean Jones “J.J.” Webb has been an Atmore resident for more than 50 years. She is a retired school teacher and administrator who has drawn upon her lifelong love of history to write her first novel.

Brewton Habitat goes green Sept. 13
Greater Brewton Habitat for Humanity has scheduled a "Going Green" building blitz for Sept. 13-15. This home will be built on Lovelace Avenue in Brewton and will include innovative energy-efficient and environmentally responsible building techniques and materials. The future home of the Qualamina Drakeford family will be the 15th house built and sold by the Brewton Habitat affiliate in the last 12 years.
The mission of Greater Brewton Habitat for Humanity is to be a witness of God's love by partnering with the community to provide affordable housing to those in need.

ACH to host ‘Dinner with the Doc’
Are you limited by joint pain in your knees, hips, back, shoulders and arms?
Dr. William Smith, orthopedic physician, will address joint pain at Atmore Community Hospital’s “Dinner with the Doc” program Sept. 23. Dr. Smith’s presentation “Get Back in Motion” will cover information about common causes and treatments for joint pain.
Hosted by Atmore Community Hospital, the free program features dinner at 5:30 p.m. followed by the educational program.
For their convenience and accessibility, Dr. Smith travels to see patients at Atmore Community Hospital’s outpatient specialty clinic each week. The Atmore native specializes in arthroscopic surgery, joint reconstruction, sports medicine, bunion surgery and fracture care.
Because seating is limited, registration is required. The session will be held in the hospital’s Mayson Auditorium. For reservations, call 368-6329.
Taste of the South looking for vendors
Taste of the South will be held Sept. 20 from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. at Heritage Park in Atmore. The event is coordinated by the Leadership Atmore Class of 2004. Tickets will be $10. The $10 ticket will allow individuals to receive five “taste testing” tickets, allowing them to try some wonderful dishes.
If anyone is interested in having a vending booth at this event, contact the Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce. There will be live entertainment provided by local talents.
Church news
St. Anna’s VBS began July 28
St. Anna’s Episcopal Church, located at 100 Lynn McGhee Drive in Poarch, has scheduled Vacation Bible School (VBS) that will be held afternoons from July 28 through Aug. 1 from noon until 4 p.m. Emphasis will be on Bible study, service music, storytelling and crafts.
Carpooling to and from Atmore will be arranged if warranted. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Zion Star to hold homecoming
Homecoming services will be held at 3 p.m. on Aug. 3 at Zion Star African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Atmore. The Rev. Denbray Archie of Limestone Faulk Church in Drewry will be the evangelist.
The Rev. Archie will also lead the congregation on Aug. 4-6 at 7 p.m. each night for special services.
Sports
Twirl Time classes will start Aug. 4
Twirl Time classes will begin Aug. 4 for preschool through high school, beginner through advanced. Classes include dance twirl, one, two and three batons, hoops, fire batons, knives and tumbling. Registration by phone is accepted.

Northwest Escambia football registration will be held from 10 a.m. until noon every Saturday in July at the Ernest Ward football field.

Historical society assists students
The Escambia County Historical Society has established a small scholarship award ($500) for second-term students at Jefferson Davis Community College to be first awarded at the fall term of this year. The award will go to a student majoring in history, archaeology or botany.
The funds will be placed in an account at the college bookstore on which the recipient may draw upon for books and supplies during their tenure at JDCC.

Helping others purchase uniforms
The Concerned Citizens of Atmore need your help to assist families in Escambia County who need help getting school uniforms for their children. The organization’s uniform closet is very low. If you have uniforms you or your children no longer need, please call 368-6023 or 251-545-9567. You may also purchase a new uniform.
Help the organization send a child to school with shirts, pants, belts, shoes, etc. The Unity House is located at 313 North Main St.
If you would like to drop off a donation, there is a drop box on the porch or call the organization and someone will pick it up.
Greenlawn serves as loan closet
The American Cancer Society Community Loan Closet, located at Greenlawn Home Health Care (810 East Craig Street), has supplies for cancer patients including, hats, wigs, breast prostheses, bras, blankets, port pillows and turbins. Please stop by and benefit from this free source.

Wawbeek VFD monthly yard sale
Wawbeek Volunteer Fire Department’s monthly yard sale will be held the first Saturday of each month 8 a.m. until. Money goes to purchase Jaws of Life. Reasonable donations accepted.
