Retired employees to meet Aug. 14
The Alabama Retired State Employees' Association Atmore Chapter will meet on Aug. 14 at 10 a.m. at Atmore City Hall. All retirees participating in the Retirement Systems of Alabama are invited.
Prevention coalition to meet Sept. 12
The Southwest Alabama AIDS Prevention Coalition will not meet in August. The next meeting will be on Sept. 12.

Historical society to meet Sept. 15
The Atmore Historical Society has disbanded for the summer. The next meeting will be held on Sept. 15, the third Monday of the month.

Habitat to host Before Hours today
The Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce’s Business Before Hours will be held at 7:30 a.m on Aug. 6 at Annie’s Community Cup, located at 125 North Main St.
The event will be presented by the Greater Brewton Habitat for Humanity executive director Alecia C. Glaize. Information about the organization’s work to provide affordable housing for those in need, as well as exploring the possibility of Atmore and Brewton working together to expand services in the area will be given. Rusty Miller of Atmore, volunteer building supervisor for the organization, will also be in attendance.
Ceremony to be held in Uriah Aug. 7
A “Veterans Memorial Dedication Ceremony” will be held in Uriah at 7 p.m. on Aug. 7. Local veterans, along with approximately 20 to 25 WWII veterans will be honored.

FNB&T to hold J.J. Webb book signing
First National Bank &Trust will host a J.J. Webb Book Signing event Aug. 8 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m., at the main office in downtown Atmore.
Books will be available for purchase for $23, at the book signing or you may log on to www.dorrancebookstore.com and check out the historical section.
Jean Jones “J.J.” Webb has been an Atmore resident for more than 50 years. She is a retired school teacher and administrator who has drawn upon her lifelong love of history to write her first novel.“Feet of Clay” is set in Richmond and Mobile during the 1880s. It is a family saga, historical romance, courtroom drama and a study of human behavior.

Summer Jam ‘08 slated for Aug. 9
Summer Jam ’08 will be held at 6 p.m. on Aug. 9 at Flomaton High School in the auditorium. There will be door prizes and the concession stand will be open.
The cost of the event is $2.
Featured will be Seraph, Twelve Gates and Soul Society. Bro. Jeff Howard will be the guest speaker.
ACH Auxiliary hosts book fair Aug. 13
Book fair and gift items by Imagination Books will be held Aug. 13 from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Mayson Auditorium Sponsored by the Atmore Community Hospital Auxiliary.
Taste of the South looking for vendors
Taste of the South will be held Sept. 20 from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. at Heritage Park in Atmore. The event is coordinated by the Leadership Atmore Class of 2004. Tickets will be $10. The $10 ticket will allow individuals to receive five “taste testing” tickets, allowing them to try some wonderful dishes.
If anyone is interested in having a vending booth at this event, contact the Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce. There will be live entertainment provided by local talents.

J.D. Singers to hold celebration Aug. 8
The J. D. Gospel Singers of Uriah will be celebrating their anniversary on August 8-10.
Friday night services will be held at the St. Paul Baptist Church of Uriah beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday night services will be held at the Grove Hill Baptist Church of Uriah beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday services will be held at St. Paul Baptist Church of Uriah beginning at 2:30 p.m.

Atmore Community Hospital will host “Putting Your Best Foot Forward” at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 27.
Years of pounding the pavement can be tough on your toes, heels, ankles and arches. Join podiatrist Dr. Bradford Egly to learn how to be kind to your feet.
ACH will also host “Knowledge is the key to aging wisely” Sept. 24.
Dr. Harrison Moore will present “Medicine Working for You.”
Programs are held in the hospital’s Mayson Auditorium. Light refreshments are provided at 8:30 a.m. with seminars beginning at 9 a.m.

Dr. William Smith, orthopedic physician, will help you “Get Back in Motion” with his presentation on the causes and treatments for joint pain at the Sept. 23 event.
The free presentation features dinner at 5:30 p.m. following by the educational program.

Historical society assists students
The Escambia County Historical Society established a scholarship award ($500) for second-term students at Jefferson Davis Community College to be awarded at the fall term of this year. The award will go to a student majoring in history, archaeology or botany.
Funds will be placed in an account at the college bookstore, which the recipient may draw upon for books and supplies during their tenure at JDCC.

Helping others purchase uniforms
The Concerned Citizens of Atmore need your help to assist families in Escambia County who need help getting school uniforms for their children. The organization’s uniform closet is very low. If you have uniforms you or your children no longer need, please call 368-6023 or 251-545-9567. You may also purchase a new uniform.
Help the organization send a child to school with shirts, pants, belts, shoes, etc. The Unity House is located at 313 North Main St.
If you would like to drop off a donation, there is a drop box on the porch or call the organization and someone will pick it up.
Brewton Habitat goes green Sept. 13
Greater Brewton Habitat for Humanity has scheduled a "Going Green" building blitz for Sept. 13-15. This home will be built on Lovelace Avenue in Brewton and will include innovative energy-efficient and environmentally responsible building techniques and materials. The future home of the Qualamina Drakeford family will be the 15th house built and sold by the Brewton Habitat affiliate in the last 12 years.
The mission of Greater Brewton Habitat for Humanity is to be a witness of God's love by partnering with the community to provide affordable housing to those in need.
