The Escambia County Blue Devils volleyball team played their first match on Thursday against Monroe County winning one game and losing three.
The Lady Blue Devils (0-1) were led by seniors Megan Hartley, Raven Culliver and Bray Brown, who attempted to lead the younger players throughout the game. Head coach Sarah Watkins said she was proud of her seniors for being leaders and added the team did a good job in their first match.
The Blue Devils won their first match against the Tigers 27-25 with a late push, but lost their next three matchups 25-19, 25-12 and 25-19.
Watkins said the team did a good job of working out the kinks in their game and will only get better as the season moves forward.
The Blue Devils are a young team consisting of the three seniors, two juniors, four sophomores and three freshmen.
Watkins said the young team still needs to learn more and added that she expected some of the “silly” mistakes made by her team.
Members of the 2008 ECHS volleyball team include seniors, Hartley, Culliver and Brown; juniors, Jordan Jaye and Joslin Frye; sophomores, Terri Wallace, Crystal Kelley, Ashley Madison, Chelsea Gaffney and freshmen, Dianca Dailey, LaRose Powell and Kearia Mason.
