Demolition began Monday on the building behind the YMCA and Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce building. The building was formerly the field house of Escambia County High School, and then the junior high, when they were housed in the YMCA and Chamber building.
YMCA executive director, Tammy Graham, said the building was used for storage and had been increasingly deteriorating for years.
Sheryl Vickery, executive director of the Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce, grew up in Atmore and fondly remembers the field house from when her brothers played football.
Graham said the City of Atmore was in charge of the demolition.
According to Graham, these are plans for a distant future because there are many other projects taking precedent. She said donations are always welcome to help with these projects.
