Atmore Christian School defeated S.L. Jones 60-54 on Nov. 13 to pick up their first victory of the season after dropping their first two games in a tournament.
ACS (1-2) hit six free throws late in the game to secure the win after trailing 29-26 at halftime.
Head coach Tim Battles said the win showed the improvement made by his team since the opening of the season. He added that the team’s opponent was a good team and certain adjustments had to be made to keep the game competitive.
After leading the first quarter, ACS fell behind in the second quarter and went into the locker room down by three at the half.
In the third quarter, ACS made a comeback and posted 12 points, while S.L. Jones was only able to get nine. Heading into the final quarter it was 38-38.
Austin Heller and Stephen Yoder led ACS in the fourth quarter with Classen hitting six crucial free throws down the stretch, while Heller added seven points.
Heller led ACS in scoring with 25 points, Allen Smith added 17 and Yoder scored 11 points. Randy Classen scored seven points.
Battles said that everyone contributed to the victory over S.L. Jones, and added that the four players who scored really took charge in the final quarter to put the game away.
ACS is now preparing for their next game against Berean Christian School in Elberta.
Battles said the team has come away from their first victory looking to gain even more improvement. He added that they know where they need to work to get better and will work on those tasks in practice everyday.
