Whether people were saying “Roll Tide” or “War Eagle” on Saturday did not matter to members of the First United Methodist Church youth group as they hosted their second annual Food Bowl.
The Food Bowl, held in front of Southern Family Markets, is an Iron Bowl themed food drive benefiting Atmore Area Christian Care Ministries.
Chandler said because last year’s Food Bowl was a success they decided to do it again and were pleased with the even higher turnout this year.
Just like their football team on Saturday, the Alabama fans pulled out a win, beating Auburn with 380 food items to 248.
Participants in the Food Bowl came by and placed non-perishable food items in a box designated for either team, with each item counting as a point. People were also able to donate money with each dollar counting as a point.
Chandler added he was surprised at the increased participation from last year considering the bad economy and poor weather on Saturday.
Chandler said the Iron Bowl theme developed as a way to encourage more participation.
The youth group chose to benefit the AACCM for the many people it helps.
The AACCM is located at 105 N. Pensacola Ave. and open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until noon.
