During a time when women were still fighting for a place in a world dominated by men, Joyce Morrissette was paving her own way, while still retaining the grace and dignity of a Southern woman.
Morrissette, a former Atmore resident and wife of the late E.R. “Bob” Morrissette, a former Atmore Advance owner and publisher, died at her home last Saturday after being ill for many years.
Her funeral service was held last week at St. Paul’s in Mobile, a service her daughter, Lulie Rutledge, said she would have been pleased with.
Morrissette showed her dedication to her church when she wrote its history, something Rutledge said she her mother lovingly did.
Morrissette was also a dedicated member of her community. One of her many activities in the community was forming the Junior Service League, a now defunct group.
Longtime friend, Hattie Maxwell, recalled Morrissette’s devotion to community as well.
Morrissette also worked on beautification projects for the city.
Morrissette was also well known for her contributions to the Advance, writing a column entitled “Afterthoughts.” Rutledge said her mother was an important reason behind the success of the paper.
Byard Swift was also a long time friend of Morrissette and complimented her work ethic.
Rutledge said her mother was ahead of her time, “She just did everything a little bit differently, very independent, not afraid to speak her mind.”
Rutledge added her parents were always very attached to Atmore and were sad to leave it when they moved to Mobile.
She died the day of the Iron Bowl game, something Rutledge said she thought would have really pleased her mother.
Her other loves included her friends and family, particularly her grandchildren.
Morrissette’s husband, Bob Morrissette and her daughter, Martha Livingston, preceded her in death.
She is survived by, her daughter Lulie and son-in-law Dr. Guy L. Rutledge III; six grandchildren, Henly Barrett (Drew), Gaines Livingston, Martha “Morri” Livingston, Harriett Katherine McClellan Smith, Clayton Smith and Stuart Smith and three step-grandchildren, Molly Rutledge, Cole Rutledge and Anne Rutledge.
