Smoke blanketed downtown Atmore shortly after 1 p.m. last Friday during a house fire that destroyed a large wood framed home at 82 Brooks Lane.
Flames could be seen from blocks away as rescue personnel quickly responded to the fire, while thick, black smoke billowed from the roof of the large home acting as a fog for miles.
At the scene, Earl Presley, who lived in the house, said that he was outside raking up leaves when he noticed the fire.
The owner of the house is Walter McCracken, who lives across the street.
Firefighters fought the blaze for nearly an hour before they could contain the fire, but it was too late as the structure was a total loss.
More than 10 firefighters with the Atmore Fire Department responded to the scene, along with officers with the Atmore Police Department and deputies with the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
