Boxing promoter Don King has been no chicken in promoting some of the world’s most talented boxers over the last 40 years, but he is an advocate of giving out turkeys. He will donate 1,000 of them to needy families in Atmore through his relationship with Chuck Stevens Chevrolet.
The turkeys will be given out as a part of King’s annual “Christmas Turkey Tour,” which has been taking place for more than 40 years.
The goal of the tour is to distribute 2.2 million pounds of turkey in the five gulf coast states that include Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.
King said he hopes that giving out this much turkey will feed more than 2 million people.
Monday afternoon, Chuck Stevens Chevrolet with help from Pepsi Bottling Company of Atmore will be handing out turkeys at the dealership.
Chuck Stevens Chevrolet co-owner Chad Bartz said Atmore was chosen because of King’s relationship with dealership owner Chuck Stevens and the pressing needs of the surrounding community.
The turkeys are being picked up and delivered to the dealership today, with assistance from Pepsi.
Bartz said he spoke with Dale Ash, vice president of Pepsi, about them getting involved with the turkey give out and they agreed to help out as much as possible.
After giving out turkeys for more than 40 years, King said he realizes the needs of families because he has seen a lot of things in his lifetime.
He said helping as many families as possible is the true goal of the “Christmas Turkey Tour.”
Turkeys can be picked up at Chuck Stevens Chevrolet on Monday beginning at 1 p.m.
