Turkeys were delivered to Chuck Stevens Chevrolet Tuesday morning as a gift from boxing promoter Don King.
The turkeys were given out as a part of King’s annual “Christmas Turkey Tour,” which has been taking place for more than 40 years.
The goal of the tour is to distribute 2.2 million pounds of turkey in the five gulf coast states that include Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.
King said he hopes that giving out this much turkey will feed more than 2 million people.
Chuck Stevens Chevrolet co-owner Chad Bartz said Atmore was chosen because of King’s relationship with dealership owner Chuck Stevens and the pressing needs of the surrounding community.
The turkeys were seen as a blessing to the recipients who gathered at the dealership Tuesday.
Alma Thomas, a native of Atmore, said she was going to fry the turkey she received for her family.
Other recipients of turkeys saw the gift as a way to fight the strain of the economy.
Atmore native Sandra Earl said the turkeys being given out are a great gift for people with tight finances.
After giving out turkeys for more than 40 years, King said he realizes the needs of families because he has seen a lot of things in his lifetime.
He said helping as many families as possible is the true goal of the “Christmas Turkey Tour.”
The dealership is attempting to get more turkeys to Atmore, but due to the weather in the Midwest it is not known if they will make it on time.
