MONROEVILLE - Mother Mary Maude Tucker DuBose Sills was born in Monroeville on May 13, 1924. She was the eldest of four children born to Spencer and Mamie Tucker. On Monday, Dec. 22, 2008 at 5:13 p.m. the good Lord called his angel from Earth to glory.
Growing up in a Christian family, she knew the Lord personally. Momma Sills joined Old Ship Missionary Baptist Church where she served as an usher under the leadership of the late Rev. J. W. Wheeler. Continuing to serve the Lord, she later united with the Harris Street A.O.H. Church of God under the leadership of the late Elder James McCreary. In 1977, she moved her membership to Jones Street Holiness Church under the leadership of Bishop Willie L. Williams where she worked and served faithfully as a licensed missionary and a member of the senior choir. She was a member of Good Hope Chapter #429, Order of the Eastern Star.
She was united in holy matrimony to Mr. Sammie LeRoy DuBose in 1941. To this union, 11 children were born. In 1949, they moved to Atmore to the “Swift Quarters Community.” Their home was structured into a God fearing home with continuing prayers, family devotion and frequent conversations of God’s goodness. In 1970, Sammie L. DuBose, Sr. was called to rest. Later she was married to Deacon Randolph Sills, Sr. until his death in 1985.
Her parents, Spencer and Mamie Tucker and a brother, Grover Tucker, also precede her in death.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories eleven children: eight daughters, Ms. Mary Jones and Evangelist Mamie (Charles) Young, both of Minneapolis, Minn., Mrs. Linda (Edward) Haynes of Omaha, Neb., Ms. Lucy DuBose and Ms. Priscilla DuBose, both of Atmore, Ms. Hazel Scott of Summerdale, Mrs. Eunice (Theodore, Jr.) Dailey of Foley and Ms. Patricia DuBose of Robertsdale; three sons, Mr. Samuel (Clara) DuBose, Jr., of Foley, Mr. Tommie (Carlie) DuBose and Mr. James DuBose, both of Minneapolis, Minn.; a sister, Mrs. Mazie (David) Palmer of Indianapolis, Ind.; a brother, Mr. Herren (Jeanette) Tucker of Sacramento, Calif.; 24 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; special extended family, Bishop Willie L.
