Sports are back

There’s a pretty good chance that moans and groans were heard as students went back to school yesterday.
It wasn’t that long ago that I was making those same gripes about starting back to classes. Come to think of it, that was last January.
This year, I have a completely different opinion about school starting back up after the holidays. I am thankful for it.
The last couple of weeks have been non eventful and almost non existent as far as sports go in Atmore, but I somehow made it through.
It’s really crazy for someone other than parents to be excited about the schools opening back up, but they aren’t in the position I have been in. Trying to find stories was tough, but thanks to a baseball clinic, Jeffrey Gardner and our All-Area team it happened.
Because of the lack of sports news it’s hard to keep the coverage as equal as I would like it to be.
The last sporting events I had dealt with the Escambia County tournament that took place at ECHS.
Other than the Blue Devils the Cougars, Chiefs and Rams did not do any playing during the holiday break.
I am going to be happy to pick up coverage of all Atmore’s area teams as they begin what should be exciting area play and hopefully runs to the playoffs.
After basketball winds down, it will be nice to get back out of the gym and cover baseball, softball and track.
As much as I love hoops action in the gym, I enjoy being outside just as much.
I want the spring semester to bring action from all the events and games I attend. This job gets more fun all the time, and I never want it to get boring.
I have also received some pictures of some young hunters that have nabbed their first deer. I apologize for not having the picture in the paper yet, but space has been limited lately and I will get those pictures in as soon as possible. You deserve that recognition.
Now that the 2009 has started I also want to be more accommodating to our readers.
Aside from the sporting events that take place, I would like to know what you might like to see in the sports section.
Is there someone you know that could have a feature done on them because of something sports related?
It doesn’t have to be an athlete, it could be someone who has been to every football game of one of the local high schools since the school’s opening or someone who travels around racing cars or bikes.
I hope I can make this year of sports just as enjoyable for you as they are for me.
