Escambia County RSVP is offering free counseling and tax preparation, giving priority to those age 60 and above.
Volunteers have been IRS trained and certified. The volunteers will prepare both federal and state returns, counsel on the tax laws and electronically send tax returns.
Amy Cooley, director of the RSVP, said the program, which began last week, is going well.
Two sites are offering the free tax assistance: the Brewton Public Library from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and Flomaton United Methodist Church from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays.
Betty Queen, coordinator of tax counseling for the elderly, said volunteers have been busy.
Anyone wishing to use the tax assistance should bring to the session: picture identification for you and spouse; Social Security cards for you, spouse and all dependents; information for all deductions/credits for you and your spouse; federal and state 2007 tax return (if available); and bank routing number and account number if you want direct deposit of federal and/or state refund.
If you are filing jointly, your spouse will need to be present to sign the tax forms. For more information and appointments, call 867-0256.
Walk-ins are welcome.
