Atmore resident Merle Matthews was transported to Baptist Health Care in Pensacola, Fla. via LifeFlight Thursday evening following an attack by a Rottweiler dog.
According to her family, Matthews underwent surgery and came out doing fine and is in stable condition.
Matthews was at her daughter’s home when she was attacked.
According to the Escambia County Health Department, it is believed only one of the two dogs on the premises attacked Matthews and it was euthanized and sent to state testing facilities to be checked for Rabies. The other dog is being quarantined for a mandatory 10-day period at a local veterinarian’s office. Both animals belong to the homeowners.
The Escambia County Humane Society Director Renee Jones said there had been no previous incidents filed about the dogs.
The Matthews family wished to express their appreciation to the community for “the calls, the love that is shown and the prayers and the community’s concern.”
