Mary F. “Girley” Fennell Johnson

ATMORE - Early Wednesday morning on March 11, 2009 Mary exchanged “Time for Eternity”. On Feb. 29, 1934, a baby girl was born to Calvin and Elizabeth Fennell of Vernon, Okla. This baby girl name was “Girley” Fennell. Girley and her family later moved to Muskogee, Okla. The time came for Girley to go to school and it was decided that she needed a “real name” Mrs. Mary Tuttle and Mrs. Francis Hudson (Douglas Elementary School Teachers) got together and combined their first names to giver her a “real name”. Here begins Mary Francis Fennell.
Later, Mary along with her father and two sisters moved to California. Here Mary began her own family. In 1973, she met and married Scott L. Johnson. Together, they made their home in San Jose, Calif. Later they moved to Reno, Nev. where she was employed by Washoe Medical Center, in the Environmental Services Department. After resigning from Washoe Medical Center, they begin their own business S &M Enterprises. Here Mary utilized her phenomenal cleaning skills that she is well known for.
Mary was preceded from life by her parents, Calvin Sr. and Elizabeth Fennell; four brothers, Arther Odd, Calvin and Major Fennell; two sisters, Elnora Williams and Bernice Crump and one granddaughter, Lyn Cavizo Bouttie.
Mary leaves to mourn, her loving husband, Scott L. Johnson; eight children, Lorraine (Carter) Haynes of Oklahoma City, Okla., Norris (Heather) Hayes of Newark, Calif., Sherry McClumum of Phoenix, Ariz., Lenice Johnson of Sacramento, Calif., Artemeas Kale of Smithfield, Utah, Robin (Weslie) Imada of Patterson, Calif., Rochelle (Derrick) McCullough of Fremont, Calif. and (born of this union) Darlene (Melvin) Johnson-Cornia of Smithfield, Utah along with 24 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and in-laws.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 19, 2009 at Christian Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. Irene Romney officiating. Repass will be held at First Baptist Church 611 Center Street Atmore, the Rev. Charles Jones Pastor.
