Hundreds of people turned out Saturday at Coleman’s Barn in Perdido in support of the family of 16-year-old Christopher Smith who lost his life in a gasoline explosion in January.
Community members put the event together to raise funds to help the family with medical and memorial expenses.
Ann Shehan, Smith’s grandmother, said she could not believe the outpouring of support shown for her family.
Shehan said she was especially overwhelmed with the amount of support by way of donations with food and items for the auction.
Barbecue plates were sold at the event and were sold-out only an hour and a half after the event began, a testament to the large amount of people in attendance.
Smith’s brother, Kyle Boyington, said he too was pleasantly surprised with the turnout.
Cheryl Boyington, Smith’s mother, said she has been extremely touched by the support shown to her and her family.
