Soon residents of Perdido will no longer have to travel far to shop for affordable living essentials.
Dollar General Media Relations Manager Emily Weiss confirmed Thursday afternoon the construction of a Dollar General Store to be located at 23512 County Rd. 47. She said that Dollar General executives consider many factors when selecting new communities to locate stores and believes Dollar General will be a real asset to the small Baldwin County town.
The store, which is currently under construction, will be 9,014 square feet and will employee 6-10 people. Weiss said the Perdido location would carry the same household necessities as most Dollar Generals.
Goodlettsville, Tenn.-based Dollar General Corporation is the nation’s largest small-box discount retailer. According to company’s Web site, the store makes shopping for everyday needs simpler and hassle-free by offering a carefully edited assortment of the most popular brands at low everyday prices in small, convenient locations. Dollar General ranks among the largest retailers of top-quality brands made by America’s most-trusted manufacturers, such as Procter &Gamble, Kimberly Clark, Unilever, Kellogg’s, General Mills and Nabisco.
In 2007, Dollar General had $9.5 billion in sales and 71,500 employees. Currently there are 8,000 stores in 35 states that sale 5,400 core products from America’s most-trusted manufacturers.
Weiss said an opening date for the new Perdido location has not been set.
“We’re looking forward to opening the new store,” Weiss said.
Dollar General’s key charitable initiative is supporting literacy and education in the communities it serves. There are grant programs that the Dollar General Literacy Foundation supports for schools and non-profit organizations, according to Weiss.
