The Blue Devils of Escambia County are almost ready to lace up their cleats, put on their pads and get to work to prepare for the upcoming football season.
The Blue Devils are set to begin their second season as a Class 5A football team after a rough 3-7 showing in 2008.
Head coach Kyle Davis said he is excited about the season ahead because of the players returning.
ECHS looks to improve at all areas of the field but only one aspect of the game needs to be addressed.
Davis said last year’s Blue Devils had all of the intangibles but lacked one important key.
To curb that problem, Davis and his coaching staff have been working to improve the strength of the Blue Devils.
Davis said that a new sense of work ethic has been taken in the weight room and added that the team has responded.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Devils have eight players returning with one goal in mind.
Davis said that the offense needs to be better about scoring when in the red zone.
Defensively, there are six starters returning with holes having to be filled in the secondary and the line backing corps.
Davis said the strongest thing about the defense will be their speed and ability to get wherever the play is.
Coach Davis is holding a meeting for the parents of eighth through 11th grade players participating in spring football practices on April 30 at 7 p.m. in the ECHS auditorium.
