The local chapter of the American Red Cross kicks off its Heroes Campaign, a month-long fundraising initiative, today.
The campaign is a volunteer-led, community-based fundraiser that allows individuals, groups and businesses to become a “hero” by committing $1,000 or more to the local chapter of the organization.
Joan Hackman, director for the local Red Cross chapter, said the Heroes Campaign is the group’s annual primary fundraising event.
Pam Martin, volunteer with the local Red Cross, said the fundraiser is important for the local community.
Hackman said the types of emergency events are things like tornadoes, floods and house fires. She said house fires are the most common disaster event in Atmore.
Today’s kickoff begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7016 located at 206 W. Ashley St. with a breakfast.
As part of the campaign, an ongoing silent auction is being held at Walgreens and baskets are up for raffle at several area locations. The organization will also hold a yard sale and has already begun some fundraising with bagging groceries at Southern Family Markets.
