With school out and summer vacation in full swing, children around Atmore are out and enjoying their time away from homework and school lunches.
About 86 of those children are attending the Atmore Area YMCA for its 2009 Summer Day Camp.
Tammy Graham, executive director for the Atmore YMCA, said this is the most attendants the camp has seen in several years.
The attendants of the summer camp are split into three different age groups with specific names. Children in the 5-6-year-old class are identified as bumblebees, the 7-9-year-old group is known as the chipmunks and the oldest group consisting of 10-12 year olds are the warriors.
Graham said the names are a hit with the kids.
Already a few weeks into the Summer Day Camp, the bumblebees, chipmunks and warriors are all getting into the exciting things the YMCA has in store.
Tuesday, the chipmunks and warriors went bowling in Bay Minette, while the bumblebees will go on their own field trip in a couple of weeks to the water park in Bay Minette.
Graham said all of the children attending are having a fun time.
To keep the children actively involved, the staff at the YMCA always has games and activities for the summer camp attendants.
Graham said field trips are always good for them plus they never just sit around if they are the Y.
Two big events that are coming up for the children at the camp are both field trips with one being exclusively for the oldest group of children.
Graham said July 1 there will be a special field trip to Brewton for a play day with its YMCA. She added that at the end of the season there will be an important field trip that the warriors get to go on to Little River.
