Brewton’s Babe Ruth All-Stars opened up the district tournament with a bang as they shelled host Atmore 10-2 Monday night at Tom Byrne Park.
The win helps put Brewton on a fast track toward possibly making the Babe Ruth State Tournament.
Brewton did not have control of the entire game though as Atmore led through the first three innings.
Atmore jumped out to a quick start as they scored two quick runs with Austin McGhee and Keaton Maher crossing the plate. McGhee reached base via a walk, while Maher ripped a double to score McGhee. Maher scored on a single by James Dean.
Following the first inning, the teams battled to a stalemate with neither side scoring runs or reaching base.
In the fourth inning, Brewton finally put a runner on base as Monterius Culliver was walked and knocked in by Reid Johnson’s double. Johnson was knocked in the following at-bat by Logan Williamson, who reached base on an error to tie the game at two.
Williamson scored the third run for Brewton to give them their first lead of the game. He scored on a double by Caleb McAnally.
The rout continued to build momentum in the fifth inning as four more runners scored including Conner Denton, Johnson, Williamson and McAnally to put Brewton on top 7-2.
Denton and Johnson each reached base on errors, and were knocked home by a Williamson’s single. Williamson was knocked in by McAnally’s single the next at-bat. McAnally scored on a passed ball by the catcher to score the final run of the inning.
Brewton put the game further out of reach in the final inning as Keith Bradley, Collin Graves and Lewis Miller all crossed the plate to make the final score 10-2.
