Senior citizens visiting the Atmore SAIL Center get more than some recreation and lunch on the second Wednesday of every month.
Those Wednesdays the seniors get a visit from a representative from SouthernCare who instructs them on different health topics and often checks their blood pressure.
On July 8, Sommer Smith, a community relation’s specialist, visited with the attendants at the SAIL Center and gave a speech on positive thinking and living.
Smith said she decided to give the speech to change up the direction of how the usual meetings with the seniors go.
Another thing that representatives do is speak to seniors and the community about the benefits of a hospice.
Smith said that in speaking with the community, it allows her to tell them everything that is available. She added senior citizens are not the only ones who are educated on the matter.
One of the main reasons SouthernCare visits the SAIL Center is to take blood pressure readings of all the seniors.
Smith said it is a service that is provided to help them know if they need to speak to a doctor about their situation. She added she was even there during one situation that called for emergency technicians.
