The reorganization of Masland Carpets parent company, Dixie Group Inc., will have little effect on jobs in Atmore, the company’s chief financial officer said Friday.
Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Dixie Group said last week it is making strides to return to profitability by reorganizing its business and rolling Masland, Fabrica and Dixie Home into one unit.
The consolidation throughout the company will cause Dixie Group to cut 50 to 60 jobs across all of its operations, according to Chief Financial Officer Gary Harmon.
Harmon said the job cuts would not show much effect on Masland located in Atmore.
Daniel Frierson, chairman and chief executive of Dixie Group, said in a conference call Wednesday that the company is making changes because activity throughout the business has not improved.
Masland employs 325 people in Atmore and 340 people in Saraland, and Dixie Group cut a total of 70 jobs between the two companies earlier in the year.
Dixie said Tuesday it lost $1.07 million in the second quarter, which was down from a $1.29 million profit during the same period of 2008.
Frierson said the results were a surprise, and added that it is causing the reductions throughout the company.
