With the school year in full swing, it is time for another year of Youth Leadership Atmore for high school juniors living or attending school in the Atmore area.
Applications for Youth Leadership are due no later than 4 p.m. on Sept. 4 at the Chamber of Commerce office located in the Atmore Area YMCA.
Youth Leadership Atmore is entering its 15th year after being started by the first graduating class of Leadership Atmore.
Nick Smith, director of YLA, said the program is a great way for young people to learn the leadership qualities that they have.
During YLA, the students involved in the program will participate in an activity every month beginning in October leading up to a graduation in Apri.
In October, the students will go on a retreat to Adventures Unlimited in Milton, Fla. where they will discuss their class project as well as take part in team exercises.
Smith said the retreat should be interesting with all of the activities that take place.
Following the retreat, activities will include learning how to make resumes and how to interact in interviews; a law enforcement day with visits to the Atmore Police Department, Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and a tour of Holman Prison; learning the history of the Atmore area; an education day with a trip to Troy University; a government course with a trip to Montgomery and learning about business and industry.
All of the activties will climax with a graduation ceremony on April 25, 2010.
Smith said that young people should apply for the YLA program to see what it entails and to find out if they are interested in it.
Youth Leadership Atmore applications are available in the Chamber Office as well as the front offices at Escambia Academy, Escambia County High School, Northview and Atmore Christian School. Homeschooled children are also eligible to participate.
