Atmore citizens were invited to see the work being performed on the old Boy Scout hut behind Heritage Park Saturday as part of “Curiosity at the Hut Day.”
According to Atmore Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sheryl Vickery, people filtered in and out throughout the event, some even sitting a while and watching as progress was being made, which she said was a lot.
The Chamber’s Leadership Class of 2009 selected refurbishing the dilapidated hut as its service project upon graduation in May. Coley, the class’ president, has also been working with the Chamber, along with Sweeting, NJROTC Commander, in getting the project complete by next October for a homecoming weekend scheduled around Williams Station Day. Vickery said the hut would be used as part of the city’s “The Year of Alabama Small Towns &Downtowns 2010,” which is a statewide promotion and offers historical markers to cities.
During the homecoming weekend, Vickery said the historical marker would be unveiled with a locally written inscription.
