Escambia County traveled away from Atmore to take on a highly ranked opponent for the second straight week Friday night as they went to Prichard to take on region foe and Class 5A No. 1 ranked Vigor Wolves.
The Blue Devils (0-2, 0-1) put up valiant effort against the top-ranked team, but had missed opportunities throughout the game including a fumble on the goal line leading to a 31-16 loss.
Blue Devils head coach Kyle Davis said his team put forth a winning effort throughout the game.
The offense was not a problem during the game, according to Davis, as it moved the ball constantly throughout the game.
Davis said the problem for the offense was turnovers once the ball had been driven down the field.
Heading into halftime, the Blue Devils were trailing the Wolves 12-8.
After halftime, Vigor came out fresh and scored quickly to go ahead 19-8.
The defensive battle that followed wore down the Escambia County defense as Vigor scored another touchdown to go up 25-8.
At the end of the third quarter, the Blue Devils were able to punch in another touchdown to pull within nine points of the Wolves with the score 25-16.
Vigor put the nail in the coffin in the fourth quarter going ahead 31-16 and wearing down the Blue Devils.
Davis said depth was an issue that held his team back, but he added that his defense was more physical this week than last week.
Next week, the Blue Devils host their first home game against Faith Academy. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Herbert Barnes Stadium.
